An Unkindness of Ghosts
This is one of those sci-fi novels that is way more about how people treat each other than about the science (although there is plenty of that).
The main characters - Aster followed by Giselle and Theo, were so distinct from each other yet I could understand and sympathize with each one's motivations behind some of their behavior.
Besides being about how individuals treat each other, we see how groups of people act as this civilization aboard the ship Matilda has the fair skinned ruling class in the top levels and the darker working/slave class in the lower.
For all the darkness throughout, there is a ray of hope that even Aster allows herself to feel at the end.
