Blood Cypress
Blood Cypress by Elizabeth Broadbent is an atmospheric Southern Gothic with elements of folk and supernatural horror.
Those of us who grew up in a small conservative town in the South can easily relate to Lila's experiences, from the family dynamics to the small minds of the locals. Broadbent does a smart job using the character of McKenzie, as the outsider, to represent the reader - especially the reader who doesn't have familiarity with this kind of town or people.
This is a one-sitting read at about 100 pages, but the characters and world read like that of a much longer work, thanks to Broadbent's way of bringing us in. I can't wait to see what she brings us next.
