Futility
Futility is the second book I’ve read from Nuzo Onoh, and it’s the second time I’ve laughed out loud within the first paragraphs - though a sympathetic wince may have accompanied it this time.
This book is a gonzo dark comedy. It’s got revenge, sacrifice (the “to the gods - or demons” kind not the “for my family” kind), cannibalism, Freaky-Friday style body swapping, mutant powers - you have to read it to believe it.
Futility follows two women, Chia, a black Nigerian woman, and Claire, a white English woman working for the British embassy in Nigeria. Both have been wronged by men in their lives, and both resort to dealing with a supernatural trickster to get revenge on those who hurt them - in painful, bloody, and even deadly ways.
Of course, dealing with a trickster never ends well for anybody, and it’s a lot of fun to follow Futility through to its inevitable conclusion.
