Book Reviews
I read books and say things about them.
Femme Feral
So, the themes, some of the humor, the relatability of the characters were appealing to me, but I wish I'd known these two things before I chose to read it.
1. A major plot point revolves around specific details of multiple cat and small pets' deaths
2. As she writes in her author's note, Beckbessinger chose to use Chat GPT to write portions of the novel which involved AI generated text
House of Rot
House of Rot by Danger Slater was a 125 pages of nightmare fuel, and I had to open a window while reading to relieve the claustrophobia. Any book that can cause a visceral reaction like that is worth reading.
Slashed Beauties
The first thing you'll see when googling this book is "Gothic feminist body horror" - and it is that, but it's also romantic and witchy and about love and loss and found family.
ITCH!
Why did I do this to myself?! Or, more to the point, Gemma Amor, why did you do this to me?! I guess the new way Gemma Amor fans will recognize each other is by the squirming and scratching. I only made it about half a dozen chapters into ITCH! before the creepy-crawlies commenced, and I haven’t stopped itching since.
You Weren’t Meant to Be Human
Part folk horror, bigger part body horror, You Weren’t Meant to Be Human is a beautiful, brutal read. I was uncomfortable almost immediately as blurred (or non-existent?) consent lines were crossed in the opening paragraphs (see note on content warnings below) - and that feeling never totally left.
