The Lamplighter

The Lamplighter is a YA novel which tend to be hit or miss for me, and this one has some of the pitfalls that make it a miss, such as overwrought, almost melodramatic language, but inconsistently so which makes it feel unintentional and unnecessary. However, there was a lot I liked about it.

The Lamplighter started out as a light gothic romance with a feminist twist as the titular character Temperance, has taken over lamplighter duties - typically a man's job - from her father in a whaling town - but it turned into a folk horror murder mystery, and I was happy to be along for the ride.
