Uncharmed
By page 3 of Uncharmed by Lucy Jane Wood, I was not only charmed, I was regretting being unarmed with tasty pastries.
I read a lot of horror, and reading this cozy, witchy romance was a sweet treat - but it was not completely free of drama.
Annie Wildwood, a baker from a disgraced witchy family, spends a lot of her time and magic to be “perfect”, in part to show her fellow witches, wizards, etc. that she is not her father.
Of course, the world around her is doing everything it can to prevent her from doing so.
Working hard to gain full member status in the coven, running her own bakery, and trying to find time for romance via a string of unsatisfying dates set up by her friends, Annie has enough to juggle, but when her coven asks her to take on the task of helping a new witch, Maeve, learn to control her powers, she can’t say no - which sets her on the path not only to love but to accepting that letting go of the need to be perfect is the key to getting her perfect life.
In the opening pages, we learn about Annie’s idea of treating oneself, and in Uncharmed, Wood gives us a treat by taking her time describing Annie’s rituals and surroundings which adds to the cozy feel as it makes us slow down and experience the sights, scents, and sounds with her, making this a perfect book to grab along with a blanket, a cat, and a tea for a cozy night in.
Also: how cute is that cover?!
