We Call Them Witches
We Call Them Witches by India-Rose Bower is an interesting mix of post-apocalyptic coming-of-age story with pagan mythology and a touch of romance.
We are told right away how deadly the creatures are, and it seems like it’s going to be a straightforward “monsters devoured the earth” scenario until we learn they can be fended off with traditional wards made of herbs, sticks, salt, etc., so the survivors refer to the somewhat humanoid creatures as witches.
Told from the point of view of seventeen year old Sara, we follow her and her family, Ma, older sibling Danny and their wife, and three younger siblings as they move from place to place to avoid not only the witches, but also other people who could also present danger.
Most of the story is about survival and what they had to do to continue surviving until their sanctuary and relative safety is interrupted by the arrival of a girl Sara’s age called Parsley which sets off a chain of escalating events - complicated by a burgeoning romance - which I could not read fast enough to see how it all turned out.
