House of Ashes
A tense, claustrophobic film about a widow under house arrest for the crime of having a miscarriage which has recently become illegal in her state (too real!) who must deal with a jerk of a parole officer - who believes she killed her husband as well as her unborn child- and an entitled podcaster trying to get a story, along with an increasingly hostile - to her boyfriend, at least - supernatural presence. T
he increasing tension between the couple heightens the oppressive feeling already inherent in a film that takes place almost entirely within the single residence, and that feeling is relieved only in the film’s conclusion where, though we learn early on who is haunting them, we finally find out why.
