My awareness of Rita Mae Brown came from reading her Mrs. Murphy mysteries in the ‘90s while sitting behind the counter at the bookstore I worked in at the time. I had no idea she had written this feminist slasher film. All the tropes one would expect given the title are there, but the girls act like normal people, with lengthy discussions about baseball and admiring the physique of the opposite sex. It’s unusual to see a casually feminist film; today’s filmmakers could learn from this fun 1982 slasher.
