Giving a whole new meaning to “beauty is pain”, The Ugly Stepsister is a version of the Cinderella story from the perspective of one of the stepsisters, here called Elvira.

When we meet her, Elvira is a sweet girl who daydreams of marrying the prince (ugh, that guy) while being told by those around her, including her mother, how ugly she is. 
As we follow Elvira, Agnes (the “Cinderella” character), and other girls as they are trained in etiquette, dance, etc. in preparation for the ball, it is impossible not to root for Elvira and feel sympathy for her as she continues to be told how ugly and unwanted she is.


The Ugly Stepsister is a beautifully made film - even the most revolting elements look beautiful - about the brutal way we treat ourselves and each other when we don’t meet traditional standards of beauty.
