Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng

My spouse and I often talk about using things like shared experiences or pop culture tropes as a shorthand to communicating (in our case, usually in a tabletop role playing game situation), and, for Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng, not only does the Covid pandemic serve as the stage for the serial killings, it serves as a shorthand to communicate the fear, anxiety, loneliness, irrationality, and all the other things that came with it in the months (now years) after it began.

In spite of the importance of the pandemic in Bat Eater, this is not simply a pandemic novel. It’s about the complex sibling relationship, mental illness, and racism and contains humor, crime-solving, folklore around hungry ghosts - and, speaking of pop cultural touchpoints, Baker mentions a series of films called Mr. Vampire which are amazing.
