The House of Last Resort

Something happened when I read The House of Last Resort that doesn’t often happen to me. I cared about these characters - Tommy and Kate - like I knew them.

Golden does a masterful job transitioning between Tommy’s and Kate’s points-of-view so that the reader can empathize with both of their experiences and makes it hard to take sides during their at first rare but increasingly common disagreements.

Their relationship was well developed, and it made me take a personal interest not only in their survival individually but as a couple.

Golden’s ability to describe a scene - I am especially thinking of Kate’s interaction with Nonno about halfway in - made me feel like I was there. Even now I feel anxious recalling it.
That’s not the only scene that stayed with me. I’m still mad at Tommy for asking her, “How can you be so selfish?”

I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll just say, if you want to feel tension and terror, and if you want to read that unicorn of a horror novel - one with a satisfying conclusion- The House of Last Resort is a must-read.
