The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires
“He isn’t a drug dealer…he’s a vampire!”
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix has been on my TBR since it came out but somehow has not made it to the top. When I saw this new full cast audio production was being released, I knew it was time.
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires follows Patricia Campbell, a suburban housewife in South Carolina, and her book club as they read a number of true crime and thriller novels, which makes their husbands believe they are being paranoid when they (led by Patricia) accuse new neighbor James Harris of being a drug dealer (which Patricia thinks will be more believable than vampire).
Dismissed and gaslit by the men (who also proceed to invade and take over their book club, turning their reading to Crichton, Clancy, and novels with the word “horse” in the title), they are forced to accept James Harris as part of their lives as he (or his money) has charmed the men.
What I got that I was expecting: dark comedy and vampires
What I got that I was not expecting: family drama, characters dealing with misogyny and/or racism, and some legitimately scary and/ or tense scenes - made especially so by the amazing audio production.
If you decide to listen to the audio, be sure to get the July 2025 released full cast audio production for maximum immersion.
