Sanitatum
This is a quiet sort of post-apocalyptic film; there is violence, as everyone is fighting over the resources that remain from the world, but it’s in short bursts and with small groups. The protagonist is in search of insulin, and he has 14 days until the existing supply runs out, which creates a built-in stop-clock and therefore sense of urgency and tension.
This is a dark film - visually and thematically. The country is in ruins and covered in snow. Though there is daylight, there is no sign of the sun. And we see more dead than living people (at least it seems like it). But there is also hope…Ilay’s entire journey is about survival - getting the medicine needed to keep his daughter alive.
Final thought: The decision to make insulin feels like a step towards rebuilding instead of relying on scavenging what was left from the world before.
