Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)

MOVIE 3 - 2025 Edition of 100 Horror Movies in 92 Days

Fear Street: Prom Queen did not live up to the promise of the earlier trilogy, but I will keep watching the series as long as they keep making films.

That said, I cannot overstate how much I disliked the filter used in this. I was a teenager in 1988, when Prom Queen is set, and I don’t remember the world being purple.

Based on the Fear Street novel of the same name, Prom Queen takes place (mostly) at the senior prom in Shadyside where a lot of pretty girls are running for prom queen and getting murdered, apparently, by the killer of I Know What You Did Last Summer based on his outfit.

Through the filter, I could barely tell people were being killed…or tell them apart…or see anything else that was going on really. Fortunately, there was plenty of exposition to keep me updated.

The rest of the film looks like someone made a list of ‘80’s tropes and ticked them off one by one.

☑️ Shy girl wants to be a writer
☑️ Popular boy has depths
☑️ Weird friend
☑️ Jocks, stoners, goths
☑️ Hair scrunchies (at least that one guy had one)
☑️ 1988 Billboard Top 40
☑️ Dance battle
☑️ Lili Taylor (okay, they’re not all bad)

I do dig the poster and its homage to the original 1992 paperback.
