How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water
I listened to this on audiobook, and I'm glad I did. The story is told in first person, and we hear Cara talking to an employment program counselor/social worker, but her revelations sound more like she's writing in a diary or at least talking to a traditional therapist because she is so open and honest.
Cara is a 56 year old Dominican woman looking for work during the Great Recession in 2009. She is brutally honest which can make it easy to judge her at times based on her attitude towards her gay son, her infidelity, and other ways she treats those around her.
But it's also easy to sympathize with her as she describes her relationship wither her mother and various hardships in her life. What I liked most was how real she felt as a character. It sounded like I was listening to someone tell me their life story.
