Book Reviews
I read books and say things about them.
The House of Last Resort
Something happened when I read The House of Last Resort that doesn’t often happen to me. I cared about these characters - Tommy and Kate - like I knew them.
Starling House
I would have liked it more if the horror were turned up a notch or two and the romance turned - either way a notch or two - as it was, it was tepid and uninteresting.
FantasticLand
I am sure listening to the audiobook is responsible for at least some of why I enjoyed it so much because the conceit is that the story is told through a series of interviews and because the voice actors are so good; it made this all the more immersive and realistic.
What Moves the Dead
The quirkiness and the addition of the fungi & the backstory of pronoun variance made it feel modern and timeless at the same time.
An Unkindness of Ghosts
This is one of those sci-fi novels that is way more about how people treat each other than about the science (although there is plenty of that).
How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water
I listened to this on audiobook, and I'm glad I did. The story is told in first person, and we hear Cara talking to an employment program counselor/social worker, but her revelations sound more like she's writing in a diary or at least talking to a traditional therapist because she is so open and honest.
Bookshops & Bonedust
I got Legends & Lattes (this one is a prequel to that) for Christmas & liked it so much, I gave myself Bookshops & Bonedust for New Year & liked it even more - probably, in part, to my love of books and previous life working in a bookshop.
Legends & Lattes
Legends & Lattes was a perfect cozy fantasy - a "new" genre that is sure to become a favorite - to break away from extended family and other obligations to read over the holidays.
Sleeping with the Monster: Stories
I had the pleasure of meeting Anya Martin several years ago at Buried Alive! Horror Film Festival. She has recently published a book of stories called Sleeping with the Monster. I guarantee you haven't read anything like them before. Go get it!
